TEXT: EXODUS 12:1-13
– 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
– 2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
– 3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
– 4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
– 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
– 6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
– 7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
– 8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
– 9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
– 10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
– 11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’s passover.
– 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
– 13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
INTRODUCTION
We are coming to our study in Exodus chapter 12. As we continue our study in the book, and we come to ch 12 which is significant and important in the revelation of the word of God. It is talking about redemption. Everything before Exodus was pointing to the fact that God would redeem His people. As we come to chapter 12, it shows us clearly the plan of redemption, power for redemption and the people that experienced the redemption of the Lord.
Going from ch 12, it shows the beneficiaries and the benefits they have in the redemption of the Lord. And as we come to the next book of the Bible, it still shows these people as the redeemed of the Lord and the life they were to live and the devotion they were to have unto God in all sacrifices and offerings they were bringing. Everything was tabled out.
As you come to the next book, Numbers, again, it is still reminding us of what the redemption has done for them, and what their responsibilities were. Then the last of the Pentateuchs, Deuteronomy was repeating to them the love and ways of God based on the redemption He had effected. In this chapter 12, and after it, everytime you look back, you are remembering the Passover, and what the Lord did for them in the chapter.
Coming to the new testament, you have the fulfilment of the redemption by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He is referred to as the Passover lamb whose sinless and blameless blood brought redemption to all. Everything takes root from this chapter, this is why the study of Exodus 12 is very pivotal in our understanding of the very purpose and plan of God in dealing with humanity.
Today, our topic is PERFECT REDEMPTION THROUGH THE BLOOD OF THE BLAMELESS LAMB. He gives us perfect redemption because He Himself is without blemish, blame and spot, and the blood He shed is spotless and perfect, and it gives us full, total and perfect redemption that takes us into eternity. This is why it is called eternal redemption.
A. THE NEW BEGINNING THROUGH THE SPOTLESS LAMB (Exodus 12:1-6; 1 Peter 1:18-21)
This event changed their calendar, they became a new nation born by the Lord Himself and the blood of the Lamb. They were to be a separate nation that the Lord would call out of the nation of Egypt. Everything about Israel was to be totally different. This new calendar would be the beginning of months.
vs 3-4. It would be a lamb for a house. If a family was too small to finish a lamb, two households could come together to eat it.
vs 5-6. The lamb must be without blemish and defect within and without, it must be a male of the first year. For you to know that this passage on redemption is not in isolation, it points to the Lamb that would come. John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the whole world.
1 Peter 1:18-21. Peter also said that the people of God were not redeemed with corruptible things, but with the precious blood of the Lamb without blemish and spot. This shows us that what we read and study in Exodus 12 is pointing to the One to come, the perfect and blameless Lamb, our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. The New Beginning of the New Nation (Exodus 12:1-2; 13:3-4; 1 Peter 2:9-12)
Exodus 13:3-4 “And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. This day came ye out in the month Abib.” This means that this important day of redemption became the first day in which the children of Israel became a new Nation. How does this apply to us as individuals and church of the living God?
1 Peter 2:9 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” The church is a nation in another nation. We are called a holy nation because we are born again, and redeemed and have a new beginning by the precious blood of the Lamb. Every believer becomes a new creature because we are different in our thoughts, attitude, disposition and character. Just as Israel was free from Egypt, so are we called out of darkness into His marvelous light. I pray that this will be a definite evidential experience in everyone of us in Jesus name.
2. The New Birthday and their Notable Nourishment (Exodus 12:2–5,8; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8; Exodus 12:15)
This day was to be the birthday of Israel as a nation.
Exodus 12:8. They were to eat the flesh of the lamb to become strong and healthy, and be free from any disease. The blood of the lamb was to give them salvation and security – “when I see the blood, I will pass over you”. The body of the lamb and bread provided food for them to eat. This is why the Scripture says, “He brought them out and there was no feeble one among their tribe” because it kept them strong. They were not to eat leaven or anything that symbolises sin, evil or evil lifestyles of Egypt.
1 Corinthians 5:7. As we are saved and born again, and our lives are transformed by the efficacious blood of the Lamb, we have this instruction as new testament believers – take out, blot out, erase completely everything that is of the old leaven that we may be a new lump. Christ, our Passover is sanctificed for us. Now, as we believe in the blood of Jesus Christ, it is no more in the lintels of our houses but on our hearts. Trusting in it gives us salvation because there is no other name given among men by which we can be saved except the name of Jesus. And He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father, except by me”. No man can come to God except through Jesus Christ because we believe in the blood that He shed for us.
vs 8. Leaven symbolises malice, anger, animosity and hatred, wickedness, iniquity, sin and depravity. As the children of Israel were to search and remove all leaven from their houses, so are we to ensure that we apply the blood of the Lamb to our hearts and there is no malice, wickedness, hatred, evil, animosity, unforgiving spirit or iniquity. As we are saved, sincerity, honesty, faithfulness and truthfulness with no deception and lying because the blood of Jesus has cleansed all these away.
Exodus 12:15. Seven days will the Passover be eaten. Seven represents a complete cycle. Seven days makes a week, and it is the number for perfection, completeness and fulfilment. Even though they were in the house under the protection of the blood, they must not also allow leaven in any of food they would eat for seven days. As for us too, the blood of the Lamb keeps us safe and secured in the kingdom of God, yet, we are not to allow leaven of malice, anger, animosity, wickedness, violence and hurting other people in our hearts. We are not to only claim the blood of Jesus, but we must ensure that we are clean and pure, after that we can be covered.
3. The Newly Begotten with A New Nature (Isaiah 66:8; Ezekiel 36:25–27; 1 Peter 1:3–5)
The newly born is to have a new nature.
Ezekiel 36:25. Remember that this is in Ezekiel, and this was written hundreds of years after Exodus. The cleansing of the blood for that generation was not enough for Israel in their generations, they still needed to believe in the Lord and He must still wash, cleanse and purge them from all iniquities. The same thing applies to us. The salvation of the church in the first century is not enough for the twenty first century. Salvation of the church in previous generations is not enough for the present generation. Every generation must take part in the faith that gets us born again – the salvation of the father will not be enough for his children, everyone must come with his own faith, repenting and believing in the covering of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
vs 26. God promised us a new heart and nature. The ones the worthies of old had is not enough for present-day believers. He will take out the stony heart and give us hearts of flesh.
1 Peter 1:3–5. What was done at the time of Ezekiel was not enough for the generations that have been born, everyone must repent and come individually to believe in the Lord Jesus, with their sins blotted out individually by the blood that was shed. This is what you must do to be saved. If you have believed in the Lord Jesus and have manifested confidence and faith in His blood personally and individually, and you remain under the safety and security of it, the heavenly inheritance is reserved for you.
B. THE NATIONAL BOND WITH THE SUBSTITUTIONARY LAMB (Exodus 12:6–11; John 11:49–52)
The word of the Lamb and His nature abiding in you, the affection, fellowship and interation with the substitutionary Lamb.
Exodus 12:6-11. They were to choose the spotless on the 10th day and keep it till the 14th day, watching and checking to ensure that there is no blemish on it. The whole congregation of Isreal shall kill it in the evening, and strike the blood on the lintels of their houses, while they would eat the roasted flesh with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Some vegetables have bitter taste, but they also have healing abilities. The flesh of the lamb will be inside them, while the blood will be on their lintels.
Nothing of the roasted lamb will be left till the morning, anything that remains must be burnt with fire. As they ate, they were to be ready, with their loins girded, and their shoes on their feet, and their staffs in their hands. If you are coming out of Egypt and going out to serve your God, you must be ready to move at any time as pilgrims and strangers. The food must be eaten in haste because it was the Lord’s Passover.
1. The Feeding on the Lamb for Strength (Exodus 12:7-11; John 6:47-51,63; 1 Thessalonians 2:13)
John 6:47-48. Jesus said I am the bread of life, but the Jews did not understand the language. He was just revealing to them that as the Israelites ate the bread and the flesh, so must they take His flesh and blood, otherwise, they have no life in them. They literally forgot that Jesus is the word personified and when you take His word, you have received Him. This is what He eventually explained to them in vs 63: His word is identified with Him, while He identifies with His word. The flesh profits nothing, but His word gives us life.
1 Thessalonians 2:13. The Thessalonian believers received the word they heard as from God and not man, and it worked effectively in them. When we receive the word and feed on it, we are feeding on the Lamb to have spiritual strength, stamina and power.
2. Forsaking all Leavens from all Sources (Exodus 12:8,15; 1 Corinthians 5:6–8; Matthew 16:6,12)
1 Corinthians 5:6–8. A little leaven, a little malice, hatred, wickedness, anger, unforgiving spirit and violence leaveneth the whole lump.
Matthew 16:6,12. We are not to allow false doctrines, but to stay under the token, sign and symbol of the blood of Jesus. We will not allow the doctrines of the Pharisees, Sadducees and Herodians to take root, but to be taken away from the people of God.
3. Following the Lord of Life in His Steps (Exodus 12:11; 1 Peter 2:21–23; Revelation 14:4-5)
The children of Israel were to eat the lamb in haste, hold their staff in their hands with their shoes in their feet as if they were ready to go out any time. We too must follow the steps of the Lord.
1 Peter 2:21–23. We should follow His steps – in what way? We must not engage in sin, lying and deception must not be seen in us. We must not retaliate when we suffer abuse, misuse, indignation of people, the reproach of men. When they splash mud on us, we don’t retaliate. They may put our names in the mud – sometimes we hear and read some of the things people say and write about us, but we commit our honour, self esteem, exaltation and our lives past, present and future into the hands of God.
Revelation 14:4 “These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.” No immorality, adultery, fornication, sodomy, lesbianism, nothing of the works of the flesh, no uncleanness, and defilement of any kind. We are following the footsteps of our Lord.
C. THE NEVER-FAILING BLOOD IT THE SAVING, SANCTIFYING LAMB (Exodus 12:12-13)
1. The Preservation in Redemption Under the Applied Blood (Exodus 12:12-13; Hebrews 11:28; Romans 3:23–26)
They were to kill the lamb and put the blood in a basin, and use hyssop to apply it to the lintels of their houses. It is not “when I see the blood in the basin”, No, they must personally apply it to their houses and also stay inside the house. Don’t say Jesus has shed His blood and you are alright, you must have a personal application of the blood by faith. Salvation comes to you when you believe in the blood personally.
Romans 3:23-26. The Egyptians and Israelites sinned but the difference between them was that the latter applied the blood while the former did not. All Israelites who took action based on Moses’s instructions were saved. Apply the blood of the Lamb, and believe that it is the only means to your salvation, redemption, blotting out of sin and you will be saved.
2. Purity with Righteousness through the Appropriated Blood (1 John 1:5–7; Hebrews 13:12–14; 13:20-21)
We know that Christ died and shed His blood, but you must appropriate it for yourself. Thank God for His Son who died to take away your sin, believe and you will be saved and not come under judgement. Pardon came from Christ’s suffering, hence, all our sins are forgiven and we have pardon, peace, and purity.
Hebrews 13:12-13 “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.” When He was on the Cross, the people made jest of Him and told Him to come down and save Himself. This is a reproach which will also come to us as we go to meet Him outside the gate, but you must not pay attention to it.
vs 20-21. The power, might, ability and consistency to do His will comes through the blood of the everlasting covenant working that which is good in you through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
3. Power to Reign through the Atoning Blood (Romans 5:9–11,17,21; Revelation 1:5-6; 5:9-10)
The blood He shed is sufficient for us, and we reign through that positioning.
Revelation 5:9 “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” We apply and appropriate the blood by faith and here on earth, we reign over every challenge and difficulty in Jesus name. Sin will not reign over you, sickness will not reign over your body, demons will not reign in your brain and family, you will reign over every demon and evil spirit. Powers of darkness will not reign over you, you will reign as you apply the blood of the Lamb. In the day and night, dominion, and from this night, you will begin to conquer all the things that used to conquer you.
Rise now and go to the Lord in prayer..
