“Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
You’re tired of feeling anxious. You’re tired of waking up with your mind already racing. You’re tired of carrying a weight inside your chest that you can’t explain to anyone, even the people closest to you. You’re tired of pretending you’re fine when you’re not. And you’re tired of wondering why you feel this way when you’re doing everything you can to hold your life together.
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why am I anxious all the time?”, you’re not alone. Anxiety has become one of the most common battles people face today, and yet it’s still one of the least understood. You may feel anxious even when nothing is “wrong.” You may feel anxious even when life is going well. You may feel anxious even when you’re praying, reading Scripture, and trying to trust God.
But here’s the truth you need to hear: anxiety is not a sign that you’re weak. Anxiety is not a sign that you’re failing. Anxiety is not a sign that God is disappointed in you. Anxiety is a sign that something deeper inside you is calling for God’s peace, God’s order, and God’s presence.
And that’s exactly what this message will help you understand.
You’re Anxious Because You’re Carrying What God Never Asked You to Carry
When God says in 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you,” He’s not giving you a suggestion. He’s giving you a command that protects your mind, your emotions, and your spiritual health. Anxiety grows when you carry things that only God can handle. You may not realize it, but you’re probably carrying more than you think.
You carry the pressure to succeed. You carry the fear of failing. You carry the weight of people’s expectations. You carry the fear of disappointing others. You carry the fear of losing what you’ve worked so hard to build. You carry the fear of not being enough. You carry the fear of the future because you can’t control it.
And every time you carry these things alone, anxiety grows. Not because you’re weak, but because you’re human. You were never designed to carry the full weight of your life by yourself. You were designed to walk with God, trust God, depend on God, and rest in God.
Anxiety becomes constant when trust becomes optional.
When you try to manage everything, fix everything, predict everything, and control everything, your mind becomes a battlefield. You’re fighting battles God never asked you to fight. You’re trying to solve problems God never asked you to solve. You’re trying to carry burdens God never asked you to carry.
And the result is anxiety that feels endless.
But here’s the good news: God doesn’t just tell you to cast your anxieties on Him — He tells you why you can. Because He cares for you. Because He sees you. Because He knows what you’re carrying. Because He knows what you’re afraid of. Because He knows what keeps you awake at night. Because He knows the thoughts that run through your mind before you even speak them.
You’re anxious because you’re carrying too much. You’re anxious because you’re carrying it alone. You’re anxious because you’re carrying what God wants to carry for you.
You’re Anxious Because Your Mind Is Full, but Your Spirit Is Empty
This is the part most people never talk about. Anxiety doesn’t just come from stress, pressure, or fear. Anxiety grows when your spirit is running on empty. You may be doing everything you can to keep your life together, but if your spirit is not being filled, your mind will always feel overwhelmed.
Your spirit is the part of you that needs God the most. Your spirit is the part of you that hears God’s voice. Your spirit is the part of you that receives God’s peace. Your spirit is the part of you that anchors your thoughts. Your spirit is the part of you that keeps your emotions steady.
When your spirit is full, your mind becomes calm. When your spirit is empty, your mind becomes loud.
This is why Jesus says in Matthew 6:34, “Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” He’s not telling you to ignore your problems. He’s telling you that your spirit needs to be anchored in today — in Him — instead of drowning in tomorrow.
Anxiety grows when your mind lives in the future, but your spirit stays in the past.
You may be thinking about tomorrow’s bills, tomorrow’s responsibilities, tomorrow’s deadlines, tomorrow’s conversations, tomorrow’s decisions, tomorrow’s uncertainties. But your spirit may still be stuck in yesterday’s wounds, yesterday’s disappointments, yesterday’s failures, yesterday’s fears.
Your mind is running ahead. Your spirit is falling behind. And anxiety fills the gap between the two.
The cure is not “positive thinking.” The cure is not “self-care.” The cure is not “trying harder.”
The cure is spiritual alignment.
When your spirit is aligned with God, your mind becomes aligned with truth. When your spirit is filled with God’s Word, your thoughts become filled with God’s peace. When your spirit is strengthened by God’s presence, your emotions become strengthened by God’s stability.
You don’t overcome anxiety by emptying your mind. You overcome anxiety by filling your spirit.
You’re Anxious Because You Haven’t Surrendered the One Thing God Keeps Asking For
This is the hardest part to admit, but it’s also the most freeing. Anxiety often reveals the exact area of your life that God is asking you to surrender. You may be praying for peace, but God may be asking for obedience. You may be asking God to calm your mind, but God may be asking you to release something you’re still holding onto.
Anxiety is often a signal that something in your life is unsurrendered.
It may be a relationship. It may be a habit. It may be a fear. It may be a dream. It may be a plan. It may be a secret. It may be a desire. It may be a sin.
You may be asking God to give you peace while still holding onto the very thing that steals your peace. You may be asking God to calm your heart while still clinging to something that keeps your heart restless. You may be asking God to remove your anxiety while still refusing to release the thing that feeds your anxiety.
God’s peace always follows God’s surrender.
This is why 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” Casting your anxieties is not just about telling God how you feel. Casting your anxieties is about releasing what you’ve been holding. It’s about surrendering what you’ve been gripping. It’s about trusting God with what you’ve been trying to control.
You may feel anxious all the time because God is calling you to surrender something you’ve been avoiding.
And the moment you surrender it, peace begins to grow.
Not because your life becomes easier. Not because your problems disappear. Not because everything suddenly makes sense.
Peace grows because your heart finally rests in God instead of resting in yourself.
Summary
You’re not anxious because you’re broken. You’re anxious because you’re carrying too much, your spirit is running on empty, and there is something God is asking you to surrender. Anxiety is not your identity. Anxiety is a signal pointing you back to God’s care, God’s presence, and God’s peace.
God is not asking you to fight anxiety alone. God is asking you to trust Him with what your mind cannot control. God is asking you to release what your heart cannot carry. God is asking you to walk with Him instead of walking ahead of Him.
And when you do, the peace you’ve been searching for will finally begin to grow.
Next Steps
1. Daily Surrender Every morning, before you touch your phone or start your day, tell God the one thing you’re tempted to carry alone. Name it. Release it. Surrender it. Trust Him with it. Let this become your daily act of obedience.
2. Daily Scripture Filling Choose one verse each day and read it slowly until your spirit is full. Let God’s Word anchor your thoughts, steady your emotions, and shape your decisions. Peace grows wherever Scripture is planted.
